Shantou, a beautiful harbor city in Guangdong Province, is situated in the southeastern corner of East Asia and on the west shores of the Pacific Ocean. As one of the five Special Economic Zones of China, Shantou government has undertaken vigorous actions to improve the infrastructure of the city during last 30 years.

To improve the condition for Israeli and other guest staffs in Shantou, the local Government has decided to have daily flights to and from HK, coordinated with EI AI flights to and from HK. Negotiations are in progress to have direct flights weekly from Shantou to Tel Aviv and back.

By overcoming these challenges, Shantou is poised to become a new economic growth hub, benefiting from the opportunities that will flow from the collaboration with the Technion and from the establishment of a Sino-Israeli Innovation Industrial Park & Economic and Cultural Cooperation Experimental Zone for overseas Chinese.

On December 16, 2015, Shantou city and Haifa city concluded sister cities.

The major industries in Shantou are plastics products, toys, textiles, printing, packaging, machinery (electrical & mechanical) and chemicals.

The major export products are electronic and mechanical products, textiles, plastic products and toys.

Long coastal lines and a pleasant subtropical marine climate provide the city with many charming tourist attractions. These include beautiful hills (e.g. Sangpu Hill surrounding STU and GTIIT), natural beaches, and exquisite islands (e.g. Nan Ao Island), together with the marine scenery that surrounds the harbor. Some citizens take advantage of the rich seaside resources to operate resort areas which provide facilities and services for tourists.

In addition, the Tropic of Cancer traverses the south of the city, making it a place to enjoy the instant alternation of spring and summer in China. The city enjoys a pleasant subtropical marine climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers.

The local culture, Chao-Shan culture( named after Shantou and Chaozhou ), is one of the most unique cultures in China, with delicacy as one of its key features. As one of the primary hometowns of overseas Chinese who live in over 40 countries of the world, Chao-Shan culture is also influenced by the exotic culture brought by the overseas Chao-Shan people and therefore creates a particular local flavor.

Teochew, the Chaoshan dialect, preserves many old Chinese pronunciations and vocabulary that have been lost in some of the other modern dialects in China. As such, many linguists consider Teochew one of the most conservative ancient Chinese dialects.

The Chao music is well known for its dulcet melody, varying rhythms and peculiar instruments while the Chao opera is renowned for its beautiful aria and various playing roles.

Teochew opera is an ancient traditional opera drama with more than 400 years of history. And it is sung in Chaoshan dialect.

There is Teochew opera performance every Friday night in Shantou Huiru Theatre at 6 Chaohu Road.

The Chao cuisine, one branch of the famous Cantonese cuisines, is the most delicate food with the highest reputation in China. Most of the dishes are cooked with seafood and various seasonings with a fresh taste, light but delicious. The most popular snack is beef balls.

The locals are fond of Kungfu tea. Oolong tea leafs are their first choice. They make tea with exquisite tea sets through a fastidious formality and etiquette, which is regarded as China's Teaism. Enjoying a cup of Kungfu tea (in tiny cups) has become one of the most welcomed forms of nightlife throughout China.
