Academic faculty and staff will generally have housing available on the Guangdong Technion campus. Apartments of  various sizes will either be provided for free or subsidized by Guangdong Technion depending on family needs and availability.


The electric power is 220V 50Hz. 

Current electricity charge is RMB0.74/kwh.



Current water charge is RMB2.98/m3.

Tap water is not drinkable in China. 9-gallon purified drinking water containers can be bought and delivered to the apartment. Another solution is to boil the tap water.


Children Education

As a rule, children of foreign faculty will have access to English language education. Such education will either be provided by Guangdong Technion based on the needs of the families on campus (especially in the initial years) or by arrangements with an international English language school to be opened in the vicinity of the campus. Negotiations are currently being conducted with Shantou City Government to establish such an international school.


Health Insurance

GTIIT will provide health insurance and personal accident insurance for all international staff.

Introduction of Medical Service in Shantou

Shantou is the medical center in East Guangdong, which has been equipped with a complete medical service system to provide Chinese and foreign faculty and staff with reliable health care. Presently, major general hospitals in Shantou include the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College(with International Medical Service Center), the Second Affiliated Hospital, and Shantou Central Hospital. In addition, there are famous specialized hospitals such as Joint Shantou University Eye Center of Shantou University and Chinese University of HK and Cancer Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, as well as a campus clinic in Shantou University. All the above hospitals possess cutting-edge medical facilities and experienced medical personnel. It is worth noting that Shantou 120 Emergency Center provides 24-hour service to ensure timely and effective cure.


The First Affiliated Hospital of STU Medical College -- International Medical Service Center

  • Introduction

The International Medical Service Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College is committed to providing high quality and efficient medical service to international patients. The Hospital has first-class medical resources and facilities. The medical team consists of experienced experts with overseas training in their respective specialties. The Center provides 24-hour appointment booking service by telephone. Patients will see their doctor immediately when they arrive. Nurses will accompany and assist patients during the whole visit.

The Center provides outpatient and inpatient services. The outpatient department consists of 2 independent consulting rooms with a comfortable waiting area. The six-bed inpatient ward has two independent suites and four single rooms each equipped with central oxygen and suction systems, dual air-conditioning system, fridge, TV, and an attached restroom.

If necessary, a specialist will be consulted and he/she will make a specialized treatment plan for patients. The doctors in the Center will administer and optimize the treatment and will communicate with the specialist in a timely manner. Patients will have their personal health records, personal health tracking and follow-up services.

  • Friendly Reminder

The following documents should be brought with patients: passport, photo ID, or medical insurance card.

  • Consultation in the Center

  • If the patient needs to see a doctor, he/she might call the liaison doctor and provide the following information: name, main complaint and symptoms. The doctor will make a preliminary evaluation. If the patient's condition is urgent the Center will help to call "120", emergency ambulance service. The ambulance will take the patient to the Emergency Department of the hospital. If the condition is not urgent, the patient is supposed to come to the Emergency Department by himself/herself.

  • The nurse will prepare the personal health record for the patient when he/she arrives and bring him/her to the waiting area of the International Medical Center.

  • The nurse will escort the patient to the doctor and arrange for blood test and/or other treatment as needed. The patient just needs to follow the nurse during the visit.

  • After visit, the nurse will guide the patient to the cashier and pharmacy and get medications as needed.

  • If the patient needs to be hospitalized, the nurse will help him/her complete the admission procedure and bring him/her to the inpatient department.

Work Permit and Residence Permit

Before taking up employment, GTIIT HR office will assist in applying a work permit notice for international staff online. The applicant can then use the work permit notice to apply for a visa to enter China. 

After arriving at GTIIT, the HR office will assist in applying a residence permit and the official work permit.

Salary and Income Tax

Salary will be deposited into employee's personal account at the end of every month. It is suggested to open a Bank of China account on campus for easier transaction. Online and/or mobile banking is encouraged for those who understand Chinese.

International staff will need to pay individual income tax to work in China legally. Based on different tax exemption agreements between China and foreign countries, foreigners can enjoy a tax-free period for the first several years working in China. Currency and Money Exchange

Ren Min Bi (RMB) is the official currency of the People's Republic of China. Yuan (Chinese: 元; pinyin: yuan; sign: ¥) is the basic unit of RMB. The exchange rate between RMB and US dollar is about: 1USD = 6.93RMB.

Exchange of foreign currencies and Chinese yuan can be carried out at banks and counters at the airports. 

Opening a Bank Account

There are 2 banks on STU campus – Bank of China and Construction Bank. The opening of a Bank account is an easy process with support of GTIIT finance office assistant. The currency of the payment can be in USD or Chinese currency.


Internet & Wi-Fi Services

GTIIT staff will have the access to Fast Line, a pilot project since Nov. 2015, going through HK to the US and acting like a VPN. 

Wi-Fi service will also be available on the whole campus.
